Overview

Letterbox ("we", "our", or "us") is a daily word puzzle game available on iOS and Android. We are committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your rights regarding your data. This policy applies to all users of the Letterbox app regardless of platform.

Information We Collect

When you create an account, we collect your email address and display name via your chosen sign-in method (email, Google, or Apple). If you sign in with Apple or Google, we receive only the information you authorize those services to share.

We also collect gameplay data including puzzles completed, words found, scores, streaks, and rank history. If you play as a guest without creating an account, your data is stored locally on your device and is not transmitted to our servers.

How We Use Your Information

We use your information to provide the game experience, sync progress across your devices, calculate anonymous aggregate statistics (such as how many players found a particular word), and maintain your streaks and rankings. We do not use your data for advertising, profiling, or any purpose unrelated to the core game experience.

Third-Party Services

We use the following third-party services to operate the app:

  • Google Firebase Authentication — to manage user accounts and sign-in (email, Google, and Apple providers)
  • Google Cloud Firestore — to store user data, game progress, and puzzle content
  • Google Firebase Cloud Functions — to aggregate anonymous gameplay statistics

These services are operated by Google LLC and are subject to Google's Privacy Policy. We do not use any analytics, advertising, or tracking SDKs.

Cookies & Tracking

Letterbox does not use cookies, web beacons, or any third-party tracking technologies. We do not track your activity outside the app, and we do not build advertising profiles. No data is shared with ad networks.

Data Sharing

We do not sell, trade, or share your personal information with third parties. Anonymous, aggregated statistics (e.g., "42% of players found this word") are visible to other players but cannot be traced back to you. Your personal data is only processed by the third-party services listed above, solely for the purpose of operating the app.

Data Storage & Security

Your data is stored on Google Firebase servers in the United States. We use industry-standard security measures including encrypted connections (TLS), Firebase Authentication, and Firestore security rules that restrict access to your data to only your authenticated account.

Data Retention

We retain your personal data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, all personal data, game history, and statistics are permanently removed from our servers immediately. Anonymous aggregate statistics (e.g., total player counts for a puzzle) are not affected by account deletion as they cannot be traced back to individual users.

Account Deletion

You can delete your account at any time from Profile → Settings → Delete Account in the app. This permanently removes all your personal data, game history, favorites, and statistics from our servers. This action is irreversible.

Your Rights

Depending on your location, you may have the following rights regarding your personal data:

  • Access — You can view all your gameplay data within the app at any time (profile, history, and statistics).
  • Deletion — You can delete your entire account and all associated data from the Settings screen.
  • Portability — You may request a copy of your data by contacting us at the email below.
  • Correction — You may request correction of inaccurate personal data by contacting us.
  • Opt-out — As we do not sell personal data or use it for advertising, there is no sale or sharing to opt out of.

If you are a resident of the European Economic Area (GDPR), California (CCPA/CPRA), or another jurisdiction with data protection laws, these rights apply to you. To exercise any right not available directly in the app, contact us at the email below.

Children's Privacy

Letterbox is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we become aware that we have collected personal data from a child under 13, we will take steps to delete that information promptly. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal data, please contact us immediately.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised policy. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
